After Mississippi State beat the UConn on a buzzer beater during Friday's Final Four matchup during the NCAA Women's Basketball Championships, they moved on to play the South Carolina Lady Gamecocks on Sunday night. But the team from the Magnolia State couldn't come out on top — South Carolina won the 2017 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship by a score of 67-55.

South Carolina Coach Dawn Staley is no stranger to career-defining games. As a player at the University of Virginia in the late '80s and early '90s, she led her team to three Final Fours and a championship game as a player. But all of those games ended in defeats.

On Sunday night, Staley got her chance yet again — this time as a coach — strategizing her team to support junior star A'ja Wilson, the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player.

Mechelle Voepel, a columnist for ESPNW and ESPN.com, recaps the final games, and what this year's tournament means for the state of women's college basketball.
